The Family Medical Centre in Carlton, Nottinghamshire, is holding weekly NHS App drop-in sessions to help residents use the service. The sessions take place every Wednesday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the surgery at 171 Carlton Road, Nottingham (NG3 2FW).

Practice staff and Digital Champions are on hand to help people download and set up the NHS App on their mobile phones. They show patients how to book appointments, order repeat prescriptions, and view parts of their medical record without needing to contact the practice by phone.

The initiative responds to local digital exclusion. The Digital Notts Annual Report 2024–2025 found roughly 7.8% of Nottinghamshire adults were offline, and a substantial proportion lacked the digital skills to manage their health through an app.

NHS England has been encouraging GP practices to make greater use of technology to improve access, reduce phone queues and free up appointment capacity for patients with the greatest need.

The Family Medical Centre serves about 12,500 patients in the Carlton and St Ann’s areas. The drop-in sessions are open to patients without prior booking — people can simply turn up during the three-hour window on Wednesdays.
