Residents in Carlton and across the borough can continue to use Calverton Leisure Centre and Redhill Leisure Centre as normal after Gedling Borough Council confirmed it will keep running both facilities. The local authority cabinet decided on 26 March 2026 to maintain control of the sites, reversing earlier proposals to pull out of its agreements to run them.

The decision follows significant public pushback against the potential withdrawal. The council had previously suggested ending its role in operating the centres, noting that a 1.3 million pound annual subsidy for leisure services was becoming difficult to sustain.

By choosing to keep the centres open under its direct management, the council intends to protect community access to fitness services. Future plans for the area include investment in the facilities, such as repairs to the swimming pool at Calverton and new gym equipment at Redhill.

The council is continuing with its broader strategy to update leisure facilities in the region, including the development of new centres in Arnold and Carlton. These upcoming projects are intended to help improve the long-term financial sustainability of the borough’s leisure services.
