A joint investigation is currently underway in Selston, Nottinghamshire, following a fatal house fire that claimed the life of a 91-year-old man on 9 May 2026. Emergency services were called to a property on Church Lane at 7:18 pm after reports of an explosion inside a garage and workshop.

The victim has been identified as Derek Poole, a well-known local resident and former autograss racer. Mr Poole, who previously owned a garage and haulage company, was described by his community as a true gentleman and a beloved family man. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, he was discovered in the wreckage of the property.

Firefighters from Ashfield, Alfreton, Eastwood, and Ripley arrived to manage the blaze, which was brought under control by 9:50 pm that night. During the emergency response, local residents were evacuated, and road closures were put in place at the junctions of Church Lane with Station Road and Stoney Lane. One crew remained at the site overnight to monitor the area.

The Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and Nottinghamshire Police have launched a joint investigation to establish the cause of the explosion. Residents in surrounding areas, including those serviced by the Carlton Fire Station, are reminded that fire safety information remains available through the fire service website.
