Gedling Borough Council has confirmed that a new multi-million pound leisure centre in Carlton, Nottinghamshire, will go ahead with a new swimming pool and gym but without an indoor bowls area. The project, known as Carlton Active, is moving to its next stage as the council looks to replace older buildings that are becoming too expensive to run.

The council is planning to build the new facility at the site of the Richard Herrod Centre on Foxhill Road. This new building is expected to feature an eight-lane swimming pool, a smaller teaching pool, a gym with 100 stations, and a cafe.

According to Gedling Leisure Redevelopment, the Richard Herrod Centre will stop taking new bookings after April 26, 2026. This closure is necessary so the council can begin the work needed to transform the site into the new sports hub.

The decision to leave out an indoor bowls rink comes despite a petition with more than 1,200 signatures from supporters of the Gedling Indoor Bowls Club who wanted to save the facility. Leaders at Gedling Borough Council say the two existing centres currently require £545,000 in yearly support and have a repair bill of £2 million.

The council’s cabinet will meet on February 19, 2026, to look at the latest designs for the centre. While the bowls club will not have a space in the new building, the council says it will work with other sports organisations to help find other places for the club to meet.
