On 9 March 2026, Gedling Borough Council voted to move forward with the Carlton Active project to build a new health and leisure hub in Carlton, Nottinghamshire. The committee voted 7-5 to progress the plans, which aim to replace older buildings with a modern space for residents to improve their health and wellbeing.

The new centre is expected to feature an eight-lane swimming pool, a teaching pool, and a gym. The building will also include exercise studios, a sauna and steam room, an assisted exercise suite, a soft play area, and a café.

The project is being developed in partnership with the NHS, Sport England, and Alliance Leisure. While local leaders looked at including an indoor bowls hall, they decided against it because it would have raised construction costs and reduced the space available for high-demand facilities like the pool and fitness suites.

Council leaders will continue to talk with the community before a final decision on starting construction is made. The cabinet is expected to decide whether to begin the build by the end of 2026.
