Train passengers travelling through Cheltenham Spa should be prepared for disruption this weekend as a new national timetable coincides with major engineering works. Starting Sunday 17 May 2026, Great Western Railway will introduce a new timetable that is set to run until 12 December 2026.
However, travellers will face immediate changes to their journeys on both Sunday 17 May and Monday 18 May. Network Rail is carrying out essential track renewal work, which includes installing new rails and equipment along with drainage improvements to boost the reliability of the railway. These works will affect all services arriving at or departing from the station for much of the day.
During the weekend, replacement buses will operate between Cheltenham Spa and several locations, including Gloucester, Worcestershire Parkway, Worcester Foregate Street, and Great Malvern. Three operators, including Great Western Railway, CrossCountry, and Transport for Wales, will see their services altered. Specifically, CrossCountry trains will run between Penzance or Plymouth and Bristol Parkway, and between Worcestershire Parkway and the north of England or Scotland until 16:30.
Mark Parker, lead portfolio manager at Network Rail, has advised passengers to plan ahead as travel times will be longer than usual due to the use of replacement bus services. Great Western Railway is also urging all commuters to check their individual journey details before they set off to avoid any unexpected delays.
