The Colchester Cycling Campaign has warned of a collapse in confidence among bike riders in Colchester, Essex, following reports that many dangerous driving incidents result in no action. The group says that cyclists are becoming discouraged from reporting close passes and aggressive behaviour to the authorities.
Data from 2023 shows that 44 per cent of reports made by cyclists to the Safer Essex Roads Partnership through its video reporting system did not lead to a prosecution or a driver improvement course. While 56 per cent of cases were taken forward by Essex Police, around 35 per cent resulted in no further action at all.
The campaign group says this has led to reporting fatigue where residents stop submitting camera footage because they do not expect the police to act. Essex Police has previously stated that the force does not have the resources required to pass every piece of video evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Local riders have also shared concerns about being fined by wardens for cycling in pedestrian areas of the city centre. They argue that it is unfair for cyclists to be targeted for minor rules while serious safety reports from their helmet cameras often go unpunished.
