Colchester City Council is starting its biggest waste and recycling update in nearly ten years by delivering new wheelie bins to 130,000 homes across Colchester, Essex, from 1 June 2026.

The council will provide most houses with a 180-litre black bin for general rubbish and a 240-litre green bin for mixed recycling. Residents will also have separate containers for their glass and food waste as the city moves away from using plastic bags at the kerbside.

According to Colchester City Council, the changes help the area follow national Simpler Recycling laws. These rules require local councils to collect more materials, such as drink cartons and flexible plastics, to make recycling easier for everyone.

While the first bins arrive in June, the full change for the whole city is expected to be finished by March 2027. Households should look out for new collection calendars, as many people will have a new day for their bin collections to help the council run more efficient routes.
