Colchester Zoo in Essex has updated its list of area closures as of 25 March 2026. The change confirms that the large African-themed area and the aardvark habitat are currently shut to visitors just before the busy spring holiday season begins.

The enclosure known as Kingdom of the Wild is closed for a major maintenance project to update viewing ramps and install new metal frames. This area is home to giraffes, white rhinos, zebras, and ostriches. Maintenance manager Chris Elsey said the project is necessary to meet the conditions of the zoo’s operating licence.

Visitors can also no longer access the Aardvark Burrow. This habitat recently welcomed a new male aardvark named Indie, who arrived in late 2025. The zoo has a private area where the animals stay while work is being carried out on their public exhibit.

While these areas are closed, the Iguana Forest has now reopened to guests. The zoo, which is run by the Colchester Zoological Society, is preparing for the Easter holidays which run from 28 March to 12 April 2026. The Waterhole play area also remains closed, but families can still use the nearby Remi Brown play area and the road train.

The 60-acre zoo first opened in 1963 and now attracts around 1 million visitors every year. Families planning a visit are encouraged to check for the latest updates on which animal areas are open before they travel.
