The new community mosaic by artist Sue Penrose will be unveiled at Broadfield Barton shopping parade in Crawley on Wednesday 27 May 2026 at 4.30pm, replacing the original making a mark mosaic that has been in place for 20 years and has suffered wear and tear. The work was commissioned by Crawley Borough Council.

The new design retains elements of the earlier piece, with hands representing the community and circles representing trees, and was created by Penrose, a mosaic artist based in Brighton and Hove who works from a studio at Shoreham Port and specialises in bespoke and community commissions.

Councillor Sue Mullins, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Culture, said the new mosaic is expected to become a local landmark as familiar and valued as its predecessor. Broadfield is one of Crawleys largest neighbourhoods, with 14,138 residents, and the Broadfield Barton shopping parade is the site where the original piece stood.
