A woman from Bishop Auckland has been ordered to pay nearly £1,000 after her household waste was found dumped in a local street in County Durham. Kimberley Harper, 41, was prosecuted after council workers discovered furniture and bags of rubbish left at the back of Brewer Street in March 2025.
According to Durham County Council, investigators identified Harper because a cardboard box with her name and address was found on top of the pile. The council wardens traced the waste back to her home on Short Street before taking the matter to court.
Harper was ordered to pay a total of £965 by Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. This payment includes a fine, legal costs, and the specific cost of clearing the rubbish from the site so that local taxpayers did not have to cover the bill.
The court heard that Harper failed to attend a mandatory interview on 30 April 2025 after being issued a legal notice to discuss the incident. This prosecution is part of a wider council campaign to stop illegal dumping and ensure residents check that anyone they hire to remove waste is officially registered.
While reports of dumped rubbish have risen nationally, the local area has seen a significant improvement. Incidents in the community fell from 8,286 in 2021 to 5,752 in 2024 as the local authority continues to increase its enforcement and surveillance efforts.
