Dame Susan Snowdon will retire as the King’s personal representative for Durham, County Durham, on 1 April 2026 after serving in the role for 13 years. According to Durham County Council, she was the first woman to hold the position of Lord-Lieutenant in the county since her appointment in 2013.
The retirement comes as Dame Susan celebrates her 75th birthday, which is the mandatory age for stepping down from the post. During her time in office, she acted as a link between the Royal Family and the local community, overseeing royal visits such as the 2025 Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral.
In recognition of her work with youth and community groups, she was named a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 2025 Birthday Honours. A special service was recently held at Durham Cathedral to thank her for her dedication to the region before her official departure.
The government has announced that Michael Butterwick CBE, DL will take over the position starting on 1 April 2026. Details published on GOV.UK and the County Durham Lieutenancy website confirm he will begin his duties as the new Lord Lieutenant immediately following Dame Susan’s retirement.
