Durham Castle in County Durham will open its doors for a free community event called “The People’s Story” on Saturday, 18 April 2026. This celebration focuses on the lives of everyday residents throughout the city’s history and offers families a chance to explore the historic site without the usual tour fees.
The day is part of the wider Durham World Heritage Day celebrations, organised through a partnership between the Durham World Heritage Site, the castle, and several local community groups. Visitors can take part in storytelling sessions, view heritage exhibits, and join in with family-friendly activities held in the Great Hall and courtyard.
A key partner for the event is The Story, the county’s central heritage and archive hub, which is providing spotlight tours and access to historical records. Instead of focusing only on the high-ranking bishops who once lived there, the displays will highlight the people who built and maintained the city over the centuries.
While entry is free for the public, organisers at Durham Castle recommend that residents book their spots in advance because of limited space. Information about the day’s full programme is being promoted by the Durham Pointers, a local volunteer group that helps visitors find their way around the city.
