The Met Office has warned Durham residents to expect widespread frost and patchy fog during the morning rush on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. Clear skies and light winds overnight in County Durham are likely to cause temperatures to drop to 1°C, creating icy surfaces and poor visibility for drivers.

Visibility is expected to fluctuate across the city, starting with moderate conditions around midnight before potentially improving later in the morning. However, patchy fog may still settle in low-lying areas and river valleys, making the commute difficult for delivery services and those on the school run.

Durham County Council plans to salt more than 1,060 miles of Priority One routes, including the busiest roads across the region. Residents are reminded that side streets and pavements may remain slippery as gritters focus on the most-used arterial roads.

Local traffic may face more delays on the A1(M) between Bowburn and Carrville. While major resurfacing work in the area was scheduled for completion in February, ongoing barrier repairs and residual narrow lanes continue to impact traffic flow, making the route vulnerable to delays during inclement weather. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check their routes before setting off.
