Murder Investigation Starts After Man Dies in Shildon

A murder investigation has been launched by Durham Constabulary after a man in his 50s died following an incident on a street in Shildon, County Durham, on 10 March 2026.

Police were called to Dent Street shortly after 1pm on Tuesday following reports of an assault. The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Alderson, who is leading the investigation, has reassured local residents that the incident is believed to be isolated and there is no wider risk to the public. There will be an increased police presence in the neighbourhood over the coming days while the investigation team continues its work.
