Three new bus services are launching across County Durham on 23 May 2026, offering residents and visitors a new way to reach popular attractions throughout the summer. These services will run on weekends and bank holidays until 31 August 2026, aiming to make travel easier without the need for a private car.
The new routes, operated by Northstar, include three distinct lines. The Durham Dales Explorer (route 873) will run from Durham City to The Auckland Project, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, The Bowes Museum, and High Force Waterfall. The Time Traveller line (route 874) connects Durham City to Ushaw Historic House and Beamish Museum, while the Tracks Through Time line (route 875) links the city to Shildon and Locomotion.
Funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, the services feature affordable fares. Adults can travel for £2.50 per single journey, while those aged 21 and under pay £1. Other ticketing options are available, including a £6 day ticket for unlimited bus travel within the county and a £7.50 regionwide ticket that covers both bus and Metro travel. Children under 11 may travel for free during school holidays under the existing scheme.
Durham County Council has invested heavily in local transport, successfully doubling its funding for bus services over the past year. This includes securing over £8 million through the Bus Service Improvement Plan. Councillor Karen Allison, cabinet member for leisure, high streets, tourism and regeneration, stated that these new routes are expected to boost the local economy and encourage repeat visits to the area.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness noted that the initiative is designed to help people enjoy days out across the region without relying on private vehicles. This expansion complements recent infrastructure improvements, such as the new Bishop Auckland Bus Station, which opened on 10 May 2026, and ongoing modernisations at Stanley Bus Station.
