A popular stretch of riverside path in Durham is set to close for four days to make way for the Durham Regatta. The route, known as Footpath 48 and running between Baths Bridge and Durham Amateur Rowing Club along the River Wear, will be shut from Friday 12 June to Monday 15 June 2026.
The closure is needed to allow the regatta to take place on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 June, with Durham County Council using powers under the Durham City Council Act 1985. During that time, the regatta committee may charge admission to the enclosed riverside area: adults £5, children aged five to 16 and over-65s £3, while under-fives and disabled visitors go free.
Pedestrians who normally use this section of the footpath will need to find another way across the river during the closure. The statutory notice, signed by the council’s director of legal and democratic services Helen Bradley on 28 May, gives around two weeks’ notice before the path is shut.
