The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across Durham on Thursday 12 March 2026. This alert remains in place until 8pm as a band of unsettled weather moves through the region, bringing difficult conditions for residents and commuters.

Local people should expect wind gusts to reach up to 50mph throughout the day. Very heavy rain is also forecast to turn persistent, with a 90-95 per cent chance of downpours between 10am and 5pm.

The weather service warns that these conditions could lead to transport delays, and residents are advised to exercise caution due to the strong gusts. Forecasters expect the heaviest rain and strongest gusts to peak between the late morning and mid-afternoon.

While the weather should begin to clear by dusk, it is likely to be followed by a much colder night with the possibility of wintry showers.
