Durham County Council announced on February 11, 2026, that Villa Real School in Consett, County Durham, will receive a £26 million investment for a new, purpose-built facility. The school provides education and care for roughly 120 children who have complex medical and learning needs.

The project will replace the current building on Villa Real Road, which has become too old to house modern medical tools and therapy equipment like hydrotherapy pools. According to Durham County Council, this is the largest investment of its kind for special education in the area’s recent history.

Jill Bowe, the headteacher at Villa Real School, said the new environment will finally match the dedicated care provided by her staff. The new site is expected to be built on or next to the current school land to keep the school connected to the local community.

Construction is likely to start in late 2026 or early 2027 once the final budget is confirmed. This move is designed to help more children stay within the county for their education instead of travelling to facilities further away.

While the new building is being welcomed, some local families are waiting to see how council changes to school bus services might affect their daily routines. The project is part of a four-year plan to improve school buildings across the region.
