The Met Office has named Storm Chandra, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Fleet, Hampshire, starting overnight and continuing through the morning of Tuesday, January 27, 2026. A Yellow Weather Warning for rain is in place from 00:00 until 12:00 on Tuesday, with forecasters putting the probability of heavy downpours at around 6:00am at greater than 95%.
The heavy rainfall is likely to cause travel problems for people using the M3 motorway and those travelling on the South Western Railway lines through Fleet station. Drivers should expect spray on the roads and reduced visibility. South Western Railway may implement speed restrictions if conditions warrant it, and National Rail Enquiries will carry any service updates if trains are delayed or slowed by the wet weather; forecasters are also warning of wind gusts of up to about 36 mph in exposed locations.
Local authorities are watching for surface water building up on roads and the possibility of the River Hart or the Basingstoke Canal rising in places. The Environment Agency is monitoring water levels, and the agency is advising residents in areas such as Elvetham Heath and Pondtail to ensure surface-water drains are clear of leaves and debris.
Hampshire County Council Highways teams are on standby to clear fallen trees, clear gullies and respond to any flooded lanes on the A3013/A323 and other local routes. Drivers are being reminded to avoid driving through floodwater — officials warn that around 30cm (about 1ft) of flowing water can be enough to float a car.
