Residents in Folkestone, Kent, are being warned of very high air pollution levels expected on Friday, 6 March 2026. The Met Office has issued a level 10 alert, which is the highest possible rating on the national scale, due to weather conditions that trap pollutants near the ground.

Forecasts show very light winds of only three miles per hour and sunny intervals, which typically prevent exhaust fumes and other particles from clearing. Because of this, the general public is advised to reduce physical effort outdoors, particularly if they notice a cough or a sore throat during the day.

Guidance from DEFRA highlights that certain people are at a higher risk and should avoid strenuous activity. This includes older residents, children, and anyone with heart or lung problems who may be more sensitive to the poor air quality.

Local officials at Folkestone & Hythe District Council monitor these levels closely, as the area is often affected by shipping emissions and cross-channel traffic. Residents are encouraged to check for updates and follow health advice while the pollution levels remain at their peak.
