A Gateshead vintage clothing business owner and veteran firefighter is partnering with a local environmental charity to help protect the River Tyne. Jonathan Hammond, who serves on the Fire and Rescue Service’s Specialist Water Rescue team, announced on 7 May 2026 that his business, Alpiner, will donate a portion of its profits to the Tyne Rivers Trust.
The partnership aims to boost conservation efforts on the river, where only 30 percent of the water currently meets quality targets. In addition to his financial pledge, Mr Hammond has committed to volunteering his time for future restoration projects, drawing on his 21 years of experience in emergency services to help improve local water health.
Sophia Stovall, CEO of the Tyne Rivers Trust, welcomed the initiative. She noted that contributions from local businesses are essential for the charity, which has worked to restore habitats and biodiversity since it was established in 2004.
Mr Hammond founded Alpiner with a focus on sustainable fashion, specialising in the repair and reuse of clothing to reduce textile waste. Residents interested in supporting the river through this partnership can learn more at the business website.
