Residents across Gateshead are invited to join local housing officers this spring to inspect their neighbourhoods and help identify areas in need of repair or improvement. The Gateshead Council housing team is resuming its programme of estate walkabouts, which will cover approximately 100 communities throughout April and May 2026.
The first of these community inspections is taking place at 10:00 on 8 April 2026 in the Ellen Wilkinson area. Further inspections are planned for 14 April 2026 in Bill Quay, Holly Hill, and Millford/Ridgeway, each led by dedicated neighbourhood housing officers.
These visits allow residents to walk through their local estates alongside council staff to highlight maintenance issues such as potholes, damaged street lighting, and problems with grass cutting or tree maintenance. Participants can also point out environmental concerns, including littering, graffiti, and dog fouling, ensuring these issues are brought directly to the attention of those managing the nearly 20,000 homes in the borough.
The council views these sessions as a vital part of its ongoing work to improve services, following an inspection in April 2025 by the Regulator of Social Housing. By working closely with tenants, the council aims to build on the progress made during the previous year, which saw over 600 hours of tenant involvement across 216 walkabouts and numerous local improvement projects.
Residents who would like to get involved in their local area can register by calling 0191 433 5353 or emailing [email protected].
