The Metrocentre in Gateshead is celebrating its 40th anniversary by launching a charity gift card fundraiser to support families in the North East. Starting 14 May 2026, visitors can participate in a prize draw to win a £500 gift card while helping those facing food insecurity.
Shoppers can find a large 2.4m birthday cake installation within the shopping centre. By scanning a QR code on the display, people can enter the prize draw for £2. There will be five different locations for the cake throughout the centre between May and the end of October 2026, offering five separate chances to win. The gift cards are valid for use at most of the centre’s 270+ shops, restaurants, and leisure venues.
All money raised goes directly to Feeding Families. This charity works to support those experiencing food poverty across the region by providing items such as food and essentials. Specifically, the funds will go toward their Every Child Deserves a Birthday appeal. This initiative provides special boxes to children whose families are struggling financially, containing items like a cake, decorations, a card, treats, and an age-appropriate gift.
The charity, which has been operating for almost nine years, runs two packaging centres in Blaydon and Fishburn and provides support 365 days a year. Since November 2025, Wayne Dobson has served as the Chief Executive Officer for the organisation, leading efforts to reach families across the North East.
