Passengers in Gateshead and across the Tyne and Wear network can expect changes to train services as Nexus introduces a new timetable starting 17 May 2026. This update comes as the operator prepares for significant travel demand during the upcoming Radio 1 Big Weekend festival at Herrington Country Park, which takes place from 22 May to 24 May 2026.

For those attending the music festival, Nexus is advising that trains will be busier than usual and that queuing systems may be necessary. Residents heading to the event from Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, or South Tyneside should travel to Heworth Interchange, where dedicated shuttle buses will be running to the park. The operator is also reminding travellers that trains will run to a Sunday service frequency on the Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May 2026.

Following the busy weekend, commuters should note that no trains will run between Pelaw and South Hylton on 31 May 2026 until approximately 11.30am. This closure is to allow for improvement work by Network Rail. A replacement bus service, numbered 901, will operate between South Hylton and Heworth and will call at all stations in both directions during this time.

These service adjustments occur while ongoing infrastructure projects continue in the region, including the demolition of the Gateshead Flyover. The structure has been closed since December 2024 due to safety concerns and is expected to be largely cleared by May 2026.
