More than 300 independent traders across Gloucester city centre will be in the spotlight from 29 June to 5 July as the city’s Business Improvement District brings back its annual Independents Week. The seven-day celebration covers everything from shops and cafés to restaurants, studios and service-based businesses, with special offers and activities planned across the city.
Gloucester BID manager Emily Gibbon said the week is about much more than a single transaction. “Whether you’re picking up a coffee from your favourite café, getting your bike serviced, or buying a gift for someone special, every pound spent locally helps keep Gloucester’s community thriving,” she said. “When you support an independent business, you’re not just making a purchase – you’re making a difference.” Nationally, independent retailers account for roughly 65 per cent of the UK’s estimated 290,000 retail outlets, a point the BID highlights on its Independents Week page.
Kate Lankester, owner of Bizarre on Westgate Street, said the alternative clothing, gift and jewellery shop is offering 10 per cent off body piercings on 4 and 5 July. “We pride ourselves on offering something different on the high street to the larger well-known stores,” she said. The Gloucester Food Dock, a waterfront hub of independently run food and drink outlets, is taking part for the second year. Operations director Sarah Mansfield said the week is a chance to celebrate businesses rooted in the South West that champion local producers.
The BID has split the week’s offers into Shopping, Food and Drink, Health and Beauty, Services, and Leisure categories. A public vote will also let residents nominate their favourite independent business.
