The Shire News Gloucestershire Community Group is calling for local volunteers to support an upcoming food drive at the Morrisons store on Metz Way in Gloucester. The event, which will take place on 15 April and 16 April 2026, aims to collect non-perishable food items to help provide emergency support for residents in need.

This collection is part of a wider community effort to assist the Gloucester Foodbank, which provides emergency food and practical help to people during difficult times. The initiative is supported by the Morrisons Community Champion programme, an internal scheme that tasks staff at every store with hosting fundraising events and food collections to support local causes.

The need for such support remains high across the region. Research from the University of Sheffield indicated that, as of January 2021, over 10% of adults in Gloucester reported suffering from hunger, while nearly 15% struggled to access food. These local findings reflect broader trends monitored by the Trussell Trust, which reported that its food banks in the South West distributed 227,735 emergency parcels in 2025.

Nationally, the network distributed over 2.6 million emergency food parcels last year. By participating in this food drive, local volunteers will help ensure that essential supplies continue to reach those who rely on these services in the community.
