A free electronic guide to summer activities has been published by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to help parents and carers plan affordable days out during the school holidays. The brochure, titled ‘What’s on this summer’, went live on Monday and collates events aimed at children and young people aged up to 19.

Included in the guide are details of sports activities, a reading challenge at the libraries and the council’s own Snapdragon Festival, which returns to Argents Mead from Monday 3 August to Wednesday 5 August, running from 11am to 3pm each day. Most advertised activities carry no charge and the few that require payment cost no more than £1. Councillor Robin Webber-Jones, the council’s Children and Young People’s Champion, said, “As in previous years, many families will be choosing to enjoy a ‘staycation’ closer to home this summer. With the cost of living continuing to affect household budgets, we appreciate that keeping children entertained throughout the school holidays can be expensive.”

The Snapdragon Festival first appeared in 2013 and has since grown into a fixture of the borough’s summer calendar. Last year’s edition featured themed days including Musical Mash Up and Let’s Get Moving. The festival identity is built around its dragon mascot, Snappy, a familiar sight to many Hinckley families. Organisers have worked with local partners such as Hinckley BID, Fosse 107 and Hinckley Library to provide everything from craft stations to giant sand pits and sports zones.

Families can download the ‘What’s on this summer’ guide free of charge from the council’s website. Bookings are already being taken for some events, and spaces are limited for certain activities, so early registration is encouraged.
