Centuries of Kirklees history will soon greet visitors at the new Huddersfield Library Hub as the West Yorkshire Archive Service prepares to move its collections into Our Cultural Heart. Kirklees Council confirmed the relocation will bring council records, historic maps, business archives, photographs and family history documents under the same roof as the town’s modern library and learning spaces.
The public has been unable to access the archives since August 2025 while more than 32,000 items have been cleaned, conserved, processed and carefully packaged for the move. From September, a pop-up exhibition will give Huddersfield its first glimpse behind the scenes, showcasing the conservation work that has readied fragile documents for the environmentally controlled strongrooms in the new building. Full public access—including for family history researchers, local enthusiasts and academics—will not resume until January 2027, when every collection has been transferred and installed.
The service’s previous home on Victoria Lane closed as part of the Our Cultural Heart regeneration scheme. The library hub is one of the first major elements to reach completion, with Phase One also delivering a food hall and public square. Planning approval already exists for Phase Two, which will turn the former library and art gallery on Princess Alexandra Walk into a new museum and gallery for the region. During the transition, essential legal and urgent enquiries have continued to receive limited support.
Teresa Nixon, Head of Heritage at West Yorkshire Joint Services, said the collections contain centuries of Kirklees history and include thousands of irreplaceable records. The archives hold council records, historic maps, business archives, photographs and family history documents that tell the story of the people, places and communities that shaped Kirklees. Once the January 2027 public reopening arrives, the revamped research areas aim to make it quicker and easier for residents, students and researchers to explore the collections.
