Kirklees Council has submitted a formal planning application in February 2026 to revitalise the historic market in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, using a 16.5 million pound government grant to restore the protected building and improve facilities for residents.

The plans include the creation of ten new food and drink stalls with a seating area and a commercial kitchen. Shoppers will also see 43 improved market stalls and the restoration of the building’s original 1887 paint colours, which include shades of red, pink, and cream.

According to Business Kirklees, the project will add solar panels and air source heat pumps to lower energy use. The council also plans to install automatic entrances, accessible toilets, and a specialized changing facility to help people with disabilities use the space more easily.

As reported by Kirklees Together, this revamp is expected to lead to longer opening hours and a wider variety of traders for the community. Construction work must be finished by March 31, 2028, to ensure the project meets the spending deadline for the government funding.
