Internationally acclaimed opera singer and former student Katherine Broderick returned to Greenhead College in Huddersfield on 13 April 2026 to lead an inspiring masterclass for current students and local high schoolers.

Broderick, who is currently on tour with Opera North, shared her professional experiences and provided hands-on guidance to young musicians during the session. The masterclass was accompanied by former student Chris Pulleyn.

Simon Jacobs, Head of Music at the college, described the visit as a privilege. He noted that Broderick’s warmth and enthusiasm helped to demystify opera, which is often seen as an intimidating genre, and helped the students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art form.

Broderick, a winner of the 2007 Kathleen Ferrier Award and a recipient of the Gold Medal at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, is among many successful alumni from the Huddersfield institution. The college continues to be recognised for its educational standards, having maintained an Outstanding status in all areas during its February 2025 inspection and recently receiving the Further Education College of the Year title at the 2025 Educate North Awards.

The music department at the college also holds a Music Mark award, recognising its commitment to providing high quality music education. This latest event forms part of the broader efforts at the college to enrich the lives of its students, building on a history of academic and personal growth programmes that have previously earned the institution the Queen’s Anniversary Prize.
