Suffolk County Council is warning residents in Ipswich, Suffolk, to prepare for icy roads and pavements as a yellow weather warning remains in effect from 5pm on February 13 until 10am on February 14, 2026.

The council expects icy patches to form, which could lead to slips, falls, and travel delays for drivers and pedestrians. Anyone who spots a hazard like a fallen tree, a blocked drain, or dangerous ice should report it to the council’s 24-hour emergency hotline on 0345 606 6171.

According to the council, gritting teams begin treating essential routes when road surface temperatures are forecast to drop to 1 degree Celsius or lower. These main roads include all A and B roads, bus routes, and access paths to hospitals, fire stations, and train stations.

Drivers should also be aware that National Highways may introduce speed limits or closures on the Orwell Bridge if conditions become unsafe. These changes often cause more traffic on local roads through the town centre, so residents are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys.

The council is using a modern fleet of gritters powered by a cleaner vegetable-oil fuel to help lower carbon emissions. Even on treated roads, motorists are advised to drive carefully as ice can still form where water runs off nearby land onto the salt.
