Ipswich Borough Council has announced it will spend £17 million to improve thousands of existing council homes across Ipswich, Suffolk, during the 2026/27 financial year. The investment will focus on making properties safer and more energy efficient for the 7,934 households currently managed by the local authority.
The planned works are set to include installing new insulation, solar panels, and better heating systems in various properties. These improvements are intended to help residents lower their energy bills while making their homes more comfortable to live in.
The Ipswich Borough Council project is funded through a Housing Revenue Account (HRA), which is supported by a 4.8 per cent rent increase agreed by councillors in January 2026. While the upgrades are expected to provide long-term benefits, the council has noted that there may be some minor disruption for tenants while the physical works take place.
The council’s wider housing investment programme has also provided a boost to the local economy by supporting 160 jobs and 11 apprenticeships across 50 different companies. These ongoing works are designed to meet new national safety requirements, known as Awaab’s Law, which demand stricter standards for addressing hazards like excess cold and fire risks in social housing from 2026.
