Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, Suffolk, will host a major new art exhibition called “Constable: A Cast of Characters” starting on March 28, 2026. This event marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the landscape painter John Constable and focuses on the people who supported his life and career.
The display is organised by Colchester + Ipswich Museums and will be open to the public until June 14, 2026. Visitors can see personal letters, historical clothing, and portraits that show the artist’s social circle of family, mentors, and rivals.
Ipswich Borough Council is hosting the event at the Wolsey Art Gallery inside the mansion. The project received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Weston Loan Programme with the Art Fund to bring rare pieces from national galleries to the town.
According to museum curator Emma Roodhouse, the exhibition tells the stories of the people who helped turn the local area into what is now known as Constable Country. This is the first of three special exhibitions planned for Ipswich during 2026 to celebrate the artist’s legacy.
