Ice Warning Causes Slippery Paths and Travel Delays in Kirkby

Residents in Kirkby, Merseyside, are being warned to take extra care this morning as freezing temperatures have left patches of ice and areas of black ice on many pavements and side streets. The Met Office issued a Yellow Weather Warning that remains in place until 10:00 AM on Wednesday 28 January 2026.

Temperatures dropped to around -2°C overnight, causing surface water to freeze into “black ice”, which is difficult to see. While major routes such as the A580 (East Lancs Road) and the M57 were reported to be clear after overnight treatment, Knowsley Council’s gritting policy prioritises primary/priority routes and does not include every small residential street; some roads in Northwood and Southdene may therefore remain slippery.

Merseytravel and local bus operators have warned passengers to expect minor delays this morning as drivers slow for safety. Most local schools are reported to be open; parents can check Knowsley Council’s official school closures list if they are concerned about travel conditions.

Authorities advise pedestrians to wear shoes with good grip and to allow extra time for journeys to avoid slips and falls on untreated paths. Local forecasts and the Met Office expect icy patches to thaw by Wednesday afternoon as temperatures rise to around 5°C.
