Community and voluntary groups across Kirkby can now apply for a share of £50,000 as the 2026 Kirkby Neighbourhood Community Fund opens its latest round. The fund, linked to the Knowsley Rail Transfer Station, opened on 30 June 2026 and will support projects in Northwood, Cherryfield, Shevington, Whitefield and Prescot North.
The money comes from a 10p-per-tonne contribution on waste exported by rail from the station, which is operated by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK on behalf of Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority. The deadline for applications is 28 August 2026, with successful applicants notified by the end of September.
Since its launch in 2018, the fund has invested more than £445,700 in Kirkby and the surrounding area. Last year, 13 projects shared the funding, including Tower Hill Community Hub, Kirkby Men’s Wellbeing Club and sports outreach programmes for young people delivered by Apollo Active. The fund forms part of a 30-year agreement between Merseyside Energy Recovery Ltd and the waste authority, ensuring a steady stream of community investment.
