Lancaster’s longest-running film festival, LA1 Shorts, is marking its 10th anniversary this May with a special celebration of independent cinema. The not-for-profit event, which serves as a launch pad for local talent, will host its milestone anniversary screening at The Dukes Theatre on 30 May 2026 at 7pm.
Founded in 2016 by filmmakers Steve Fairclough and Lucie Carrington, the festival has spent the last decade promoting Lancaster and Lancashire creators. Over the past 10 years, the event has screened 139 short films, totalling more than 980 minutes of screen time. The festival is noted for its work with new and young filmmakers, providing support to enhance their work and ensure it is ready for the big screen.
This year’s anniversary programme features 11 short films competing in two categories: Lancashire Audience Choice, where attendees vote for their favourite entry on the night, and National Best Film, which is selected by a professional panel. Previous festival entries have included a variety of formats, such as animations, documentaries, and silent films, occasionally featuring appearances by actors like Julie Hesmondalgh and Maxine Peake.
The success of the festival has been supported by key collaborators including Atkinsons Coffee Roasters, Lancaster University Health Innovation Centre, The Whale Tail, Forty Five Records, and Northern Heart Films. The festival continues to influence the careers of its participants, with the inaugural 2016 winner, Izzy Pye, using the recognition as a springboard to complete a first-class degree at Manchester Film School.
Tickets for the anniversary event are priced at £7. Residents can book by calling 01524 598500 or by visiting the theatre’s website.
