On 15 March 2026, Lancashire County Council treated priority roads across North Lancashire and Lancaster, Lancashire, to help prevent ice from forming. The council announced the move at 1:00 PM to ensure that the busiest routes were ready before temperatures dropped later that evening. This work is part of the standard winter maintenance programme that runs every year from October through to April.

The council uses a fleet of 58 vehicles to cover priority routes, which include the main A and B roads in the region. These crews also focus on keeping essential access paths open for hospitals and emergency service stations. By treating these high-traffic areas, the council aims to reduce the risk of accidents caused by icy road surfaces.

While the local council manages regional roads, National Highways is responsible for the major roads and motorways. This includes segments of the M6, M55, M58, M61, M65, A56, and A585. Drivers are reminded that since every road cannot be gritted, it is important to take extra care during freezing conditions.
