Police are investigating after a burglar walked into a house on Adelphi Street in Lancaster through an unlocked rear door and stole a black rucksack. Lancashire Constabulary said the sneak-in burglary happened during the evening of 29 June 2026.

The rucksack was later found discarded in the alley between Adelphi Street and Havelock Street, though some of its contents were missing. PCSO Martin Miller, who covers the John O’Gaunt and Bowerham areas, issued a community alert on 1 July asking residents for any information, including footage from CCTV, doorbell cameras, or dashcams.

The appeal comes as Lancashire Constabulary continues Operation Defender, its force‑wide push against residential burglary funded by Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw. The initiative guarantees that every reported home burglary gets an officer visit, with neighbourhood teams providing follow‑up crime prevention advice. In June 2026, two brothers from Yorkshire were jailed for five years and eight months at Leeds Crown Court after they admitted carrying out eight house burglaries across Lancaster and Morecambe on a single evening.

Residents who have not yet done so are being reminded to secure all doors and windows, and to report suspicious activity. Police can be contacted on 101, quoting the Adelphi Street burglary reference.
