Luton Town have appointed William Lancefield as Head of Recruitment after an end-of-season review of the club’s scouting and recruitment operations. Lancefield, who officially starts on 19 June, arrives from Heart of Midlothian where he held the same role and has previously worked in scouting and analyst roles at Southampton, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Hatters CEO Gary Sweet called the appointment “a significant coup for Luton Town”, saying Lancefield’s “experience, knowledge of the game and clear understanding of our needs made him the outstanding candidate for this pivotal role.” Lancefield himself revealed he knew “straight away” he wanted to join after meeting with the club, adding that he understands “what it takes to build strong, competitive squads.” The new man will lead a data-informed approach to talent identification aligned with the club’s playing philosophy and squad strategy.

The appointment coincides with the departure of Jay Socik, Head of Recruitment Analysis, who leaves after more than five years, and Senior Scout Alexander Wilkinson, who departs after four years. Both were credited by the club for their contributions to Luton’s rise, including the Premier League campaign. Socik joined full-time in 2021 and helped build squads that delivered consecutive play-off pushes, promotion and a season in the top flight.

The reorganised department will see Lancefield working closely with manager Jack, while Player Recruitment Manager Yousuf Sajjad and Chief Scout Marc Tracy continue in their roles. Club ambassador Mick Harford also remains as a senior scout.
