Cheshire Constabulary is urging people in Macclesfield and the surrounding areas to be careful after reports of a woman posing as a charity worker to scam residents. The warning was issued on 4 March 2026 after several people in the region were approached for money by someone claiming to represent a disability charity.

The woman is described as being between 25 and 30 years old, around 5ft 7in tall, and having auburn hair. Police believe she has been active in the area for several months, using different methods to trick people into giving her money in public places and supermarket car parks.

In one case from November 2025 in Chester, a woman asked a member of the public for a five pound donation using a card reader. However, the machine had been set to take 5,000 pounds from the victim instead of the small amount they had agreed to give.

More recently, on 2 March 2026, a woman with the same description was seen in the London Road area of Holmes Chapel. She was carrying a sign that said she was deaf and was pressuring people to go to nearby cash points to withdraw money for her.

Detective Sergeant Jordan Trentini has advised residents to always check if a charity is genuine before making a donation. Anyone who has been approached or has information about these incidents should contact the police by calling 101 or by visiting the official police website.
