Cheshire East Council is calling Macclesfield residents to a flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall on Monday 22 June at 2pm to launch Armed Forces Week. The event honours serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families, with Councillor (Major) Anthony Harrison, the council’s Armed Forces Champion, urging the community to attend.

The ceremony coincides with a veteran support drop-in running from 11am to 3pm in the same building, where veterans are invited to a free afternoon tea. Councillor Harrison said the week is a national opportunity to recognise the dedication, bravery and sacrifice of those who serve or have served in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, adding that the local ceremonies provide a meaningful moment for the community to demonstrate its appreciation and pride.

The Grade II* listed Town Hall, a Greek Revival building designed by Francis Goodwin and dating from 1823 to 1824, has long anchored civic life in Macclesfield. Armed Forces Week runs nationally from 22 to 28 June, with the observance culminating in Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June. This year’s national celebration takes place in Aldershot, Hampshire.

A simultaneous ceremony will be held in Crewe at Memorial Square at 10am. The council noted all residents, community groups, veterans and families are welcome at the free Macclesfield event.
