Road Improvements Start Soon at Poynton Shared Space

Cheshire East Council will begin essential highway improvement works in the Poynton Shared Space area on 16 March 2026. The 12-week project in Cheshire aims to fix wear and tear that has built up since the area was first introduced in 2011 to help cars, cyclists, and pedestrians move together safely.

The work includes improving drainage, upgrading street lighting, and resurfacing sections of London Road North, London Road South, and Chester Road. Maintenance will also take place at Fountain Place to ensure the road surface remains fit for purpose for the community.

To help reduce the total time roads are dug up, the council is working alongside a utility company that needs to install a new water main at the same time. While this coordination is intended to be more efficient, the 12-week schedule could be extended if the water system work takes longer than expected.

Drivers and bus users should prepare for lane restrictions, road closures, and general traffic management throughout the duration of the project. Pedestrians will still be able to use the area, but cyclists will be asked to get off their bikes and walk through the sections where work is being carried out.
