David Lindsey, the long-serving General Manager of Middlesbrough Theatre, retired on 15 May 2026 after 27 years in the role, marking the longest tenure in the venue’s history. His departure brings to a close a 55-year career in theatre, which began in 1970 when he started as an aspiring actor before moving into various technical production and management positions.

Before joining the team in Middlesbrough in 1999, the 78-year-old spent eight years as General Manager at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford. During his time overseeing the 484-seat venue, which is owned by Middlesbrough Council, Lindsey helped the theatre navigate significant hurdles, including ongoing financial pressures and the impact of the Covid pandemic. He noted that despite these challenges, the theatre emerged in a strong position.

One of the most notable achievements of his leadership was securing performances by the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Lindsey identified this as a highlight of his career, as many initially doubted that such a prestigious production could be hosted at the venue.

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke paid tribute to the outgoing manager, describing him as a brilliant custodian of one of the jewels in Middlesbrough’s crown. He added that Lindsey would be a hard act to follow.

Middlesbrough Theatre, which first opened in 1957, remains one of the first new theatres built in England after the Second World War. As he steps down, Lindsey plans to spend his retirement with his partner, Carol, and focus on his garden.
