Middlesbrough Council gritting team covered five priority routes, including the A66 and the town centre. This 180-mile network takes about two hours to complete using a fleet of six gritters and a stock of 4,000 tonnes of salt for the current winter season.
A yellow ice warning from the Met Office remains in place until 10:00 AM on February 17, 2026. Drivers and walkers are being told to stay careful on side streets and pavements, as these smaller routes are not usually salted by the council.
Local residents can find salt bins in their neighbourhoods to help clear untreated paths near their homes. According to Middlesbrough Council, which is currently managing a £7 million budget gap, any empty or damaged salt bins should be reported through the council website.
