Milton Keynes City Council announced a new £40,000 investment on 4 March 2026 to help six traditional high streets across the city thrive. The funding will support local shops and improve public areas in Bletchley, Newport Pagnell, Olney, Stony Stratford, Woburn Sands, and Wolverton.

The money is split into two main parts to help different areas of each community. A total of £30,000 will go towards activities run by local groups, while £10,000 will be used for physical improvements like new seating and plants to make shopping areas more attractive.

Councillor Shanika Mahendran, Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking, explained that the move aims to bring more visitors to these historic town centres. These six high streets are home to more than 700 businesses and provide jobs for over 4,600 people.

Council leaders plan to work with local town councils and business groups to start the work during the 2026-27 and 2027-28 financial years. This project focuses on keeping high streets busy and successful, as they currently have fewer empty shops than the national average.

The investment is intended to act as a boost for local independent traders who rely on residents visiting their shops in person. By making these historic areas cleaner and more welcoming, the council hopes to ensure these town centres continue to be a central part of local life.
