Residents in the Middleton and Monkston areas of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, reported a strong smell of burning plastic on the morning of 17 March 2026. The odour was first noticed around 7 am, causing local families to raise concerns about air quality and potential health risks in their neighbourhood.

As of 19 March 2026, Milton Keynes City Council has not yet identified a cause or released an official statement regarding the incident. Without a confirmed source, people living in the area have turned to social media to discuss whether the smell came from a local fire, industrial activity, or illegal waste burning.

Milton Keynes City Council has the legal power to investigate smells that come from commercial or industrial buildings under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. However, these rules do not allow the council to take action against smells that come from private domestic homes.

Because the smell was reported as a temporary event, it can be difficult for environmental health officers to track the exact origin once the air clears. For now, the source of the burning plastic smell remains a mystery for the households in the eastern parts of the city.
