A major project to deliver up to 21,500 new homes in the northern part of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, was officially advanced this week (3 February 2026). The plan includes five new schools and new transport infrastructure to help the city grow toward its Strategy for 2050 target of a population exceeding 500,000.

Milton Keynes City Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with partners including master developer Urban&Civic and housebuilder Taylor Wimpey. The MoU commits the council and developers to align delivery timetables and coordinate the delivery of homes, schools and other supporting infrastructure.

Key components of the proposal include a new junction on the M1 (J14a) and a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) route linking the northern expansion back to Central Milton Keynes, providing a direct public-transport connection between the new neighbourhoods and the city centre.

The move follows recommendations from the national New Towns Task Force and reflects a wider trend toward planning larger, infrastructure-first communities rather than small, scattered developments, as reported by industry outlets such as Construction Enquirer. Local leaders and development partners say the coordinated approach is intended to secure investment and deliver the homes and services the city needs to remain a strong place to live and work.
