Drivers in the Phippsville area of Northampton were reported to be at risk from a cluster of large potholes on Carey Street after a FixMyStreet report was filed to West Northamptonshire Council on 11 February 2026 at 08:34, describing the defects as a serious danger to vehicles.

Local residents told reporters they fear the pits could cause tyre or rim damage and — if drivers swerve to avoid them — could push motorists into the path of oncoming traffic. The report was logged through the council’s FixMyStreet portal.

Under West Northamptonshire Council’s highway guidance, “If in the judgement of the inspector the defect is considered to represent a significant or imminent hazard, repair or make safe within 24 hours.” The council’s published criteria also say that on local roads a defect generally needs to be around 50mm deep to meet the safety-defect threshold that prioritises urgent repair.

The report comes as the council finalises its draft 2026/27 budget proposals. The council has published a draft revenue budget figure of £458.9m (excluding the Dedicated Schools Grant) for 2026/27 to cover day-to-day services — including highways — rather than that sum being earmarked solely for road works.

West Northamptonshire Council has in recent years invested in new repair machinery, including the JCB Pothole Pro and Roadmender units, which the authority says speed up and improve the durability of repairs. However, some residents in older, town-centre wards such as Phippsville say they rarely see the machines on smaller residential streets and feel those neighbourhoods need more targeted investment to keep roads safe for everyone.
