North Northamptonshire Council officially opened a new state-of-the-art skatepark at Bassett’s Close Park in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on 24 March 2026. The opening provides young people and fans of skateboarding with a modern space for exercise and community activities. This new facility replaces an old skatepark that was no longer in good condition.

The project was completed following a 15-year campaign by the Wellingborough Skatepark Group, which was led by local residents including Jake Campion and Lewis Warboys. The group worked to secure a safer and more modern area for everyone to use. Construction on the site began in November 2025 after planning approval was granted the year before.

Designed and built by Bendcrete Skateparks, the facility has been moved to a more visible area of the park away from nearby houses. This new location, combined with solar-powered lighting and CCTV cameras, is intended to make the park feel safer for visitors. The project was paid for using money from local property developers and council funds.

Council Leader Martin Griffiths confirmed that the skatepark is part of a larger plan to improve the local park. These improvements also include new outdoor gym equipment and expanded play areas for children. The official opening marks the end of a long wait for residents who wanted better recreation spots in the town.
